“The Artizans have mastered the merging of classical and modern, resulting in an authentic blend of old and new; and have challenged basic music genres to create their own label of sound.”
Josephine & The Artizans are a London based Classical-Crossover band. The group blend Classical music with Hip-Hop and Rock to create a unique, fresh and innovative sound.
Classically trained Josephine was growing increasingly tired of the cultural gap between the pop-scene and classical world. They are both, of course, based on the same thing. For years people have been becoming more and more catholic in their tastes, so she decided to create something which is neither classical or commercial, but a blend of both.
The beginnings, in a studio at the University of Westminster, were humble. A drum loop, some strings, a rap and Josephine. After playing a few seconds of her demo to some musicians, however, she had the beginnings of the band.
It takes a while for any band to settle into the collective feel of it’s individuals. But when you have eleven musicians from very different backgrounds… Eventually, however, something clicked. The players were just right and the sound was something different. The rest, as they say, is history.
Since then, Josephine & The Artizans have found themselves pushing a minibus through the mud at Galtres Festival, passing a flask around the BBC studios, piercing fan’s nipples with badges at Brownstock and, I guess most importantly, writing, playing and recording a serious amount of music.
Critically, they have had an excellent reception: live sessions on national and local radio, a ton of reviews both online and on-air and plenty of invitations to play across the country including (but by all means not limited to) Ronnie Scott’s, Cargo, Hootananny and the O2 Islington.
